We asked MFA alumni publishing books this spring what they’re reading, and what they'd recommend. Here are Jeff Latosik's picks:
"I’ve been toggling through a few titles recently. In poetry, the work of Don Coles, Tracy K. Smith, Cathy Park Hong, Gregory Scofield, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Robyn Sarah, and Meaghan O’Rourke to name a few. All good stuff.
Non-fiction, most recently, was Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel, which was exceptional. I also read Gabor Mate’s book about addiction as well as Maia Szalavitz’s Unbroken Brain—both exceptional books. Lots of profound and at times uncomfortable takes on addiction, but the books show how addiction is so deeply embedded in the human experience.
I’ve got Exit West and Bellevue Square in my cue and Inherited Disorders by Adam Ehrlich Sachs and Greener Pastures by Michael Wehunt have been good recent books. I also revisited Andre Alexis’ Despair and Other Stories of Ottawa recently, which certainly held up! The only question is did I hold up!"
Jeff's third collection of poetry, Dreampad, is published by McClelland & Stewart. The Toronto launch event will be at the Tranzac on April 25 at 6pm (also featuring fellow M&S poet Stevie Howell).
