MFA grad Hillary Rexe returns to the SummerWorks Performance Festival to collaborate with Jacob Zimmer and Small Wooden Shoe on Are We Not Horses — The Sci-Fi Summer Musical, an indie rock musical about robot horses and precarious labour, based on Rock Plaza Central’s hit album Are We Not Horses.
Small Wooden Shoe is an independent arts creation, education and research company that focuses on social questions and uncommon connections. For Are We Not Horses, the company has been working with Rock Plaza Central’s record and Bertolt Brecht's play Mother Courage to create a sci-fi musical about a family of robot horses looking for meaningful work in a future Canada. Rexe, Vicki Stroich, and the cast have been working with artistic director Jacob Zimmer collaboratively throughout the creation process to craft an immersive SummerWorks performance.
After studying with Judith Thompson and Colleen Murphy in the MFA program, Hillary produced her first play, This is the August, in SummerWorks 2016. This year, she has been collaborating with Small Wooden Shoe on a number of projects, including Are We Not Horses and Check Your Friends, a salon on contemporary performance and collaborative creation processes. “Working with Small Wooden Shoe has been a special experience for me,” Rexe says. “I’m nerdy about form and process, and it’s been exciting to build a musical out of a record that already has its own narrative and fan base.”
Are We Not Horses sold out by opening day of the SummerWorks Festival, and a Friday matinee has been added to accommodate demand. Tickets are available online.
