We extend a huge congratulations to alumna Melanie Mah who took home the 2017 Trillium Book Award for her debut novel, The Sweetest One (Cormorant), which was also her her thesis project in the MFA program. "With lines and imagery that are as unique as they are beautiful, Melanie Mah has crafted a story of an under-told Canadian experience with deft, humour and so much grit," commented the Trillium jury—comprised of Cherie Dimaline, James Grainger and Soraya Peerbaye—in their press release. The award comes with a $20,000 purse, and is administrated by the Ontario Media Development Corporation.
Finalists for this year's prize included fellow MFA participants Danilla Botha and Leesa Dean, as well as Laurie Graham for poetry, and the Trillium Poetry Prize went to longtime friend of the program, and former MFA Administrator, Meaghan Strimas. In a strong field across categories, it was wonderful to see our MFA family so well represented!
