We're so pleased that the short lists for the various Trillium Book Awards this year are packed with members of the Guelph MFA community!
Alumnae Leesa Dean (Waiting for the Cyclone) and Melanie Mah (The Sweetest One) are joined by current student Danila Botha (For All the Men and Some of the Women I've Known) on the Trillium Book Awards short list. Leesa and Melanie's nominated books are also the published versions of their respective MFA thesis projects. These remarkable women represent three of the six finalists for the $20,000 prize.
Last year, the $10,000 Trillium Book Award for Poetry—which recognizes literary achievement for a first, second or third published work of poetry—was awarded to alumna Soraya Peerbaye for her haunting second collection, Tell: poems for a girlhood. This year, alumna Laurie Graham (Settler Education), and former program administrator Meaghan Strimas (Yes or Nope) are two of the three finalists.
Come out and celebrate these fantastic writers. Winners will be announced at a public event on June 19, 2017 at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street, Toronto. Several of the shortlisted authors will read from their nominated titles. There is no admission fee—it is first come, first seated. Doors will open to the public at 6:30 pm, and the readings will commence at 7:00 pm. To register for tickets through Eventbrite click here.
