Congratulations to alumni Robert Chafe and Anna Chatterton, two of the five finalists for this year's Governor General's Literary Award in Drama. Chafe's nominated play, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams (Playwrights Canada Press), premiered at Ottawa's National Arts Centre, while Chatterton's Within the Glass (Scirocco Drama/J. Gordon Shillingford Publishing), was originally produced by Toronto's Tarragon Theatre.
Based on Wayne Johnston's the novel of the same name, The Colony of unrequited Dreams centres on the unlikely story of Joe Smallwood, the controversial political figure who ushered Newfoundland through confederation and became the island's first premier. Within the Glass—which Anna began writing as her MFA thesis project—takes on the meeting of two very different couples after a critical mistake at a fertility clinic leads to the implantation of a fertilized egg into the wrong woman.
The 2017 jury for Drama was comprised of Alanis King, Bruce McManus, and Erin Shields. Winners of the Governor General's Literary Awards in all categories will be announced on November 1st.
